A changing appreciation of rules

How I view some rule sets has changed dramatically over my time in the hobby. What I want from a game is a lot different now than it was before.
Fantastic Battles is a fantasy mass combat miniature game from Irregular Wars. This is the first army I am contemplating building for the system. It includes some background for the army as well as the stats for the various units.

Picking armies

Trying to narrow myself down to two armies is not going to be easy.

Playing Age of Fantasy

Some comments and observations after playing a few games using the Age of Fantasy rules from One Page Rules.

Starting out

So what sort of games do I want to play and what armies do I want to build? A look at some options and a discussion of each of them.

Combat models for mech combat

I take a look at how combat is calculated in some of my favourite mech combat games. Much nerdy discussion that even may include a look at ballistic energy falloff.

Battle of the Ancients overview

Want to play a board game that has magic, science, aliens, mutants, multiple game modes and different types of scenarios? Then you will want to check out Battle of the Ancients?

One Deck Galaxy game changes

One Deck Dungeon is a new title from Asmadi Games that expands the system used in One Deck Dungeon. It has several major changes from the ODD rules that make it a much more strategic game.

There are two things that I really like. Card games and strategy games that involve fantasy monsters and magicians fighting. In years past, I used to play a game called Summoner Wars 1, specifically the Master Set released in 2011, and bought most of the expansions that Plaid Hat Games released for it. It was a fun game but I eventually stopped playing it. The main problem with the game was the scaling difficulty that left it difficult to find players.
